How To: Get Started

When you click the link to sign-up, you will be asked for a user name and your email address.
The user name should be a one or two words without spaces and preferring no hyphens in the name as your username becomes your address ( yourname.BEAGLEHUNTERS.COM ) so using a space or hyphen will make it harder for folks to find/type your address. (So username is your address not your site name ie   USER: ohiogundog  Title:  Ohio Gundog Association )

You will still be able to name your site with muti words and hyphens if you wish but you do not want them as your address. Now if you are wishing to create the site while you are signing in as a user, check the box to create a blog/site.  When you submit this information, the system will immediately send a email to your address that you will need to click on the link in it to validate your account. If you do not notice the email, please look in your spam filter in your email to see if it did not get caught-up there and if it did, just mark it as a preferred sender and it should not happen again.

Also take note of the password the system issued in a email as you will need it to log-in. It is a system generated letters and numbers to get started with.

Now go to site and log-in with your user name and password that was emailed to you. Take a look around your site administration panel to be familiar with where everything is. The first thing for you to do is change your password to something you will remember.

The next item you should do is look at the pre-loaded themes and choose one the suits your taste/needs other than the default theme that is pretty drab. Don’t worry, if you decide latter that you do not like it, you may switch to others without loosing your content. These themes were created by others and may not work 100% and I have no control of them but have loaded many for you to choose from. The Atahualpa is the most deluxe and has the highest control but I would not suggest you use it unless you are very knowable with blog software and computer files (not for beginners anyway). You will just need to do some trial and error to find what each will do and find what works for you. Within the theme you select, you can give your site a proper name instead of the username/site address  you are useing but its advisable to keep them similar. (ie   USER: ohiogundog  Title:  ohio gundog association )

We will end this “getting started post” with a brief on the difference between pages and posts.

Pages are for more permanent information like “about me”, “my dogs” or things/info that do not change until you amend them.

Posts are a daily/weekly/monthly entries that will be dated and diminish with time like a for-sale listing or news from the trials or your opinion on new dog food.

The system uses the same word processor like interface for each, you must make certain you select the correct type when starting and do not forget to select a category for your posts (you can edit/change later if you did) .

Hopefully this will be enough to get you started. The system uses a modified wordpress engine so if you have ever used wordpress before, you should take right to it.

We are now a iPhone Compatible Site

BeagleHunters.Com now is completely viewable on iPhones and has a special iPhone compatible features.

If you visit your site with your iPhone and do not like the special iPhone loads, go (flick/scroll) to the bottom of your screen and turn off the function and you will see it in normal zoom-able way as you would on your desktop.

This is a valuable app for those that want to use the iPhone on the site away from home but have poor bandwidth on their phone network (as many of us do with AT&T). But you do have the choice.

We are hoping that many of you might be able to load your video and pictures to your site directly from your field trials and events as they happen, and giving all of us the video news on the winners.

We are testing this ability and not sure what problems if  any we may have.

This could to lead to other enhancements in the future of the site with video media.

Akismet And Comment Spam, How to set-up

Akismet is a plug-in to our site available to you if you chose to activate it with this code

2ac0f7deb572

What Akismet will do for you is counter most of the automated script/spam to the comments of your post.

It is not perfect however, so you need to keep an eye on it till you see how well it is working. It is like a national database for these spam posts or like a spam scanner.

Once in a while (or worse) you may see posts to your comments like “Great post, do you have anything more on this”. This is very generic and if you moderate your comments, this would not be one to allow unless you know the user who posted it.

This would be true of any post where nothing specific is mentioned about what was in the post.  Granting the post will no doubt enable them to send the next one without moderation and spam you with adds for Viagra or worse in your comments area. This can be tiresome for you if you have many posts.

We suggest you use the Akismet and keep your eye on it for a while till you see how good a job it is doing for you.

Good comments do get caught-up. They call that “Ham”, so you need to look for “Ham” in the Akismet once in a while to not offend a comment from a real person. Teaching the application what is good when it makes a mistake will make it more accurate as time goes on much like a spam mail catcher.

This is just a extra we wish you to have available to make your BeagleHunters.com site easier. But if it is not doing well for you in your first 30 posts, you probably should deactivate it.

What is a “PERMALINK” and How to use them

Simply defined a “PERMALINK” is a web link or html link to a page or article from the site that contains all the information to take a user to the exact post/page and does not change even if the post or page is updated.

Use Example:

I had read an article from a site I thought was interesting or informative and wanted to refer to it in my website or blog and wanted readers to be able to go directly to that article and read it for themselves.

How to use:

Within the Beagle Hunters.Com website, you can “right click” on the “title” of any post or page and select “copy” or “copy link” (this will contain the permalink info) and paste it to the address of a “HYPERLINK” of your post.

So what is a hyperlink ?

Text (or photo) that contains special information that will cause the users browser to jump to the address of that information when clicked by user.

Putting Links/Hyperlinks/Permalinks  in your post

While in your post/page editor and editing in “visual mode” (see tabs on right side of editor), First you must select the text you want to insert the link to by clicking and dragging the mouse to highlight the text you wish to insert the link on. Then you will see a icon of a single chain link as a button on the top of the visual editing menu. When you click this link button, a box appears to allow you to enter the link information in the site url section. This is where you insert the link/hyperlink/permalink. If you used a method above to copy the link, you can “right click” inside the site url box and select “paste”.

The next option that is important is the “target”. If you wish to have the link open in a new browser window or tab, select “open in a new window” (target=blank) option. We suggest this method to keep the user from losing his spot on your page. Otherwise the link will open in the current window and visitor will need to use the back on their browser to return to you. Update/Save or Save Draft.

The link will normally show as blue or underlined text

This is all dependent on theme settings as to color and style user has selected.

You may use this method from posts within the system with the PERMALINKS or “right click” and “copy” the address from the url (browser address) of the page anywhere on the web to post as a hyperlink.

There are other methods and options but this is the limit of the tutorial as it will be all most of you will use in your posts. If you are more advanced, you can switch to the html editor tab and insert the commands directly if you wish. For those interested in html editing, you might do your link in visual editor and switch to html mode just to have a look at what the code looks like but don’t fool around in html editor if you do not know what you are doing and you do not wish to re-write the post. Create a post just for experimenting with html and delete it when done.

How to put YouTube Video in your Site/Blog Post/Page

1st – (for security reasons) Please do not Try to embed anything other

than YouTube Video or WMV (windows media video) from a hosted site !

Originally I thought I could find a video on YouTube that would explain this for you but…

After watching several dozen videos , I did not see one that had correct information.

So this weird way of explaining it should get’r done!

1- Go to the YouTube video page where your video is posted. Normally to the right hand top area you will see two  little rectangular boxes with text inside. On the left of those small boxes, one of them says URL and under that one says “embed”.

2-”Left Click” in the embed box once and the text will be highlighted.

3-”Right Click” on the highlghted text in the embed box and then select “copy

4-Switch to your blog page where you should be ready to insert this into your post.

5-Go to spot in post/page where you want to insert the video and type a xx (this is so you may find it in next step)

6-Click on the HTML tab of the blog post/page editor (things might look weird as you are looking at the code & text)

7-Find the xx you created in the text and click just past your xx so curser is in correct spot.

8-”Right Click” in that spot and select “Paste

9-Switch back to Visual mode by clicking “Visual” in the editor.

10-Erase the xx you created to mark the spot.

you can now select the embeded object (by clicking on it) for positioning left, right, center as you would with any text and can now finish typing your post/page and update/publish your post.

Once you have done this several times, you probably will understand enough that you will not need to mark the spot with the xx. Be sure NOT to insert/paste the embed code inside any html tags   <  >

This is a unorthodox way of explaining it but it should get the Job Done!.

If you wanted to just create a link to the web page with the YouTube video, just copy the “url” from the YouTube post instead of the embed code and select the the text in your post you wish to make it link from by clicking/dragging your mouse and select the “link” (chain link on your editor) and paste the url text just like any hyperlink but you may want to  also select   “open in a new page” (target=_blank)   so it opens in a new browser tab/window This will keep you site page up so user does not get lost from it while they enjoy the link you are sending them to.

This same video using a link as mentioned above.

Folks Can Find You By “personal name” In Search IF…

If you are wanting to be sure that folks searching the blog can find you by “personal name”, We suggest this:

Be sure to Make/Edit  a “ABOUT” page and include your name (first and last and/or nickname) in that page.

We would also caution you to be careful how much personal information you place there about yourself as anything good can be used for bad.

Finding your Site/Blog by personal name will not be a problem once that info is in there. As many of you will be using names that are very similar around beagles & hunting etc,  It may be a problem to find your site by site/blog name if they do not know it’s name or can not spell it correctly (not knocking anyone but some use long and unusual names).

We will be adding more advanced features for search of all types in the future.
